Fast Blockchains: Speed as the Priority
In the first two articles, we learned:
- What a blockchain is
- How blockchains decide what gets added
Now let’s look at a different approach.
Not all blockchains prioritize security above everything else. Some start with speed and user experience as the main goal.
These are often called fast blockchains.
They are built for people who want:
- quick transactions
- low fees
- apps that feel like normal software

Why Speed Matters
Most blockchains can feel slow compared to the apps we use every day.
Sending money, trading tokens, or playing a blockchain game can take seconds or minutes.
That works for secure systems like Bitcoin. But it does not work well for:
- games
- social platforms
- apps that need instant responses
Fast blockchains focus on making the experience feel normal, even if that means making some tradeoffs.

How Fast Blockchains Work
Fast blockchains make different choices behind the scenes.
They can:
- reduce the number of computers needed to approve a transaction
- order events efficiently so many transactions can happen at once
- optimize infrastructure to handle large volumes
For example:
- Solana uses a combination of Proof of Stake and Proof of History. This allows it to process many transactions quickly while keeping a secure timeline.
- Sui is built for high-volume applications like gaming. It lets hundreds of transactions happen at the same time without slowing down.
The goal is simple: fast confirmations, low fees, and smooth user experience.
Tradeoffs: Speed vs Security
No blockchain can be perfect.
Fast blockchains trade some decentralization and security for speed.
They rely on:
- more coordination among validators
- specialized infrastructure
- sometimes fewer participants in decision-making
These tradeoffs are deliberate.
Fast blockchains are not trying to replace Bitcoin or Ethereum. They are a different tool for a different purpose.

How Users Experience Fast Blockchains
For users, fast blockchains feel like ordinary apps:
- Payments confirm almost instantly
- Transaction costs are very low
- Games, social apps, and memecoins feel smooth
For example:
- Sending USDC on Solana can feel as simple as sending money on a mobile app
- Playing a blockchain game on Sui can handle many players at the same time without lag
The system design behind the scenes makes this possible.
Big Takeaway
Blockchains are tools, each designed for a purpose.
Some focus on security.
Some focus on flexibility and programmability.
Some focus on speed and convenience.
Understanding these tradeoffs makes the blockchain world easier to follow. Once you see the design behind the system, crypto becomes a little more understandable.
